Port Light: NC's Saltwater Highways

Can you imagine...
Waiting on the shoreline for a boat to deliver your mail, the lumber to build your home, or a new piano?
Sailing in a skiff to the nearest doctor after you broke your leg?
Living on the coast of North Carolina when there were no paved roads or bridges?
For centuries boats were the lifeline.

Everything was delivered by boat. Teachers, preachers, and dentists. Deputies and doctors. Chickens and mail. News from around the world and from the next village down.

Bit & Grain, a proud partner of the project, is thrilled to share Port Light — an engaging and interactive online exhibition about the saltwater highways of the Outer and Inner Banks.
